Architectural Design of the Marquette Hotel cont...
Each tower contains arched openings, also characteristic of Spanish design, with wroght iron balconies and topped with a red clay tile roof. The main entrance, also facing Broadway, is surrounded by ornamental glass and protected by an iron marquise with the hotels illuminated sign. The front of the building is lined with large arched display windows for the lobby shops.
The lobby contained a terrazzo floor in shades of browns and grays and Spanish tile wainscoting on the textured plaster walls. Huge columns supported the highly ornamented ceiling, stenciled in bright hues of blue, red, and green. The Spanish atmosphere was continued in the finishes as well. The large arched windows were covered with embroidered cream-color net curtains topped with red velvet valances with gold trim. Along side the windows were fringed and draped silk brocaded damask side hangings. The heavy walnut front doors of the hotel faced the reception desk, just under the mezzanine balcony. In the corner of the lobby stood a unique fireplace made of cream Cretan stone with a detailed bas relief in the mantle.
