For those of you who have already seen my resume and are asking
yourself the famous question, "How did an Interior Design major
end up in programming?", I'll help you out. It's a crazy, long,
convoluted turn of events that got me to where I am, but in the
end, I'll admit that my mother might have been right in 1995 when
she told me to "do something with computers".
1975 - Brought into the world to two thrilled parents. "Welcomed"
by two not-so-thrilled siblings.
1976 - Put up for sale (door-to-door) by those two same siblings.
No sale, but they were grounded for a week.
1981 - Started Kindergarten! (I'm a December baby for those of
you wondering why it took me six years to get here.) Got my first
computer - a TI99. Technically, it belonged to my brother, but I
spent a bit of time on it. I remember playing PONG from a datacassette,
but not much else about it.
1983 - Home computer system was upgraded to the newly-released
Apple IIe. Again, mostly games... Montezuma's Revenge, Summer Olympics,
and my personal favorite, Below the Root.
1986 - My brother bought me my first camera - a BRIGHT yellow 110.
1992 - Got my first real job as a lab tech at Fox Photo / CPI Photofinishing.
Found that the costs of supporting photography as a hobby are just
under that of my total income. (Oh, now working on a Macintosh SE
- I can't believe they've made such little diskettes that can hold
over 1mb!)
1994 - Left Lindbergh High School after a 4-year stay. Packed up
my Macintosh SE and headed to Southeast Missouri State University.
The SE, of course, was "portable" with the help of a LARGE
bag.
1995 - Worked part-time at a local photo lab. Mom pressured me
to pick a major. She suggested computers. I suggested photography.
After all, who wants to sit in front of a computer all day?
1996 - Declared a major in Interior and Architectural Design. Started
work at a family-owned photography studio. Spent most of the next
three years in the dark.
1997 - Reluctantly agreed to shoot a friend's wedding. Swore I'd
never do another one. Bought a pet bunny (Tucker) at a county fair
for ten dollars. Purchased my first PC (Internet at HOME!). Family
asks why my line is always busy.
1998 - Ordered second phone line.
1999 - Graduated and spent two weeks in Europe before rushing into
the real world. Returned to St. Louis to find a job. Accepted a
position as a photo researcher for a stock photography company.
Loved my job.
2000 - Stock photography division closed doors. Another department
approached me with "Think you can learn to program?" Ten-dollar
bunny now worth a thousand in medical bills.
2001 - Designing and programming full-time. Thousand-dollar bunny
dies.
2002 - Joined Lutheran Hour Ministries, and here I am today!
